Let’s face it – it can be hard to commit to making more home-cooked meals. Even with the best intentions, not having what you need when you need it can be a deal-breaker. No one feels like running out to the store every time you want to try a new recipe or cook the next meal. It’s easy to end up settling for what’s on hand or pulling up at the fast food for a cheap meal instead of paying for several items at the store.
On the other hand, some of you will probably agree that deciding to make a snack or try a new recipe and discovering that you actually have everything you need, is exciting! And that’s what a brain-healthy pantry can do for you.
So, what is a brain-healthy pantry? Cabinet and refrigerator shelves stocked with basic foods and ingredients needed to whip up better brain choices. And it starts with the choices you make, because, as you know, availability and proximity can influence your choices – even with the best intentions.
When my husband Oliver diagnosed with diabetes, one of the first decisions I made was to do what I could to keep temptation out of his way. That meant stripping out pantry and fridge of foods that weren’t good for him. We initially had a few “heated conversations” about it, but the bottom line was that I would not be putting things on our shelves that could spike his blood sugar. That was one of the best decisions I could have ever made! In time, he actually thanked me for “sticking to my guns”. That’s not to say that he wouldn’t go out and purchase bad choices from time to time but, over time, those instances became fewer and fewer, and now are extremely rare.
I’ve used this same strategy with brain health. Anyone can have a better brain by looking at your cabinet, refrigerator, freezer shelves and knowing:
-
- what to throw out
- what to keep
- what to add
- how to shop
- how to store properly
- how to prep for quick snacks and meals
- then, taking action to create a Better Brain Pantry.
And I can help!
