How much exercise are you giving your brain?
As a wellness coach for over 12 years, exercise is one of my things—because every organ in your body benefits from movement, including your brain! In this blog, I want to talk about engagement for better cognitive function. Finger exercises are great, but there are many ways to stimulate your brain and give it a mental workout.
We all know the traditional brain exercises—crossword puzzles, word searches, jigsaw puzzles. These are popular, especially as people age and want to stay mentally sharp. But let’s be real—not everyone enjoys puzzles! The good news? You have lots of other options.
Your brain thrives on variety. Even if you love crossword puzzles (like I do), that shouldn’t be the only thing you do. When something becomes routine, your brain goes on autopilot, and you lose out on real stimulation. Your brain loves discovery, problem-solving, and novelty, so it’s important to mix things up.
That’s what we’re diving into today—alternative ways to engage your brain beyond the usual puzzles. Let’s start with games!
Games for Brain Stimulation
There are so many types of games that challenge your thinking:
- Board games: Mystery-solving games like Clue keep your brain active.
- Card games: These engage memory and strategy.
- Brain-training apps: Fun and convenient!
- Pattern games: Remember Simon? It’s a great memory challenge.
Don’t stick to just one type of game—mix it up for maximum brain benefits.
Coordination Games
Hand-eye coordination activities are also great for brain health:
- Juggling: Try using grapefruits or even boiled eggs!
- Jacks & marbles: Classic but effective.
- Darts, bean bag toss, horseshoes: Simple but engaging.
These activities also double as social fun!
Learning New Skills
Being a lifelong learner strengthens your brain. Try:
- Languages: Sign language, Braille, or a foreign language.
- Musical instruments: You don’t need to master the piano—even a harmonica counts!
- Dancing: Line dancing, square dancing, Zumba—it all works.
- Tai Chi: Great for balance, breathing, and focus.
Hobbies
Hobbies keep your brain engaged in different ways:
- Arts & crafts: Painting, embroidery, or even adult coloring books.
- Outdoor activities: Hiking, biking, and nature walks.
- Traveling: A great way to expose your brain to new cultures, languages, and environments.
There are so many ways to keep your brain sharp—you just need to keep challenging it!
