Exercise is called the Fountain of Youth. There are actually 5 types of exercise that are good for your brain. If you’re serious about helping your brain age gracefully, you’ll want to include all 5 in your exercise program – or the one you’re about to start.
So what forms of exercise are we talking about? 1) Cardio, 2) Strengthening, 3) Stretching, 4) Balance, and 5) Coordination exercises. I’m sure you’re familiar with the first four, so I want to focus on Coordination exercises. These are eye-hand or eye-foot activities that have often turned into a recreational or professional sport, usually played in teams. Unfortunately, as we age, we participate less and less, to the detriment of our brain. The Good News is that many coordination exercises don’t actually require a team, can be played at home, and are a lot of fun.
Do you remember playing crochet, badminton, darts, horseshoes, jacks, juggling or ping pong? These are just some of the coordination exercises that will get the job done. In fact, ping pong is considered by some to be one of the best overall exercises for your brain, combining motor movement, problem-solving, decision-making, and eye-hand coordination all in one. What’s my latest coordination exercise? Juggling oranges! Right now I can barely handle two, but it’s a process. I’ll keep you posted.
In case you’re wondering, cardio and strengthening exercises are the forms that will help your brain the most. But don’t forget about the others, because they all bring something to the table. So make that move!
