As you age, one of the biggest changes to your brain is its process of naturally shrinking. Unfortunately, our prefrontal cortex (decision-making, problem-solving center) and hippocampus (learning and memory center) are usually the most affected.
But the “Good News” is that this biological aging, which includes shrinking is not directly tied to chronological aging – in other words, although its going to happen, it’s not necessarily going to be in step with your age – you can slow it down, if you know how!
And research says that intentionally eating a variety of herbs and spices plays a major role in slowing down this natural aging process. Why? Because they’re loaded with antioxidants that reduce the damage that oxidative stress can cause in your brain. Oxidative stress is a by-product that comes from the brain “handling its business”. It’s gonna happen. It’s a part of life. You can’t stop it (unless you’re dead!). But, supplying your brain with “damage-control” antioxidants is in your control. Its your choice and the more antioxidants you regularly give your brain, the slower its prone to age. But you can’t just eat anything. It’s got to be the right food – and spices are near the top of the “antioxidant list” because they’re:
-
- loaded with antioxidants
- can be added to just about anything
- have a long shelf-life
- are sold for pennies on the dollar!
Add them to your soups/stews, desserts, marinades, dips/sauces, infused water, cereals, casseroles, smoothies, the sky’s the limit. You can also drink spiced teas. They’re everywhere these days or you can easily make your own. Adding spice to your life is a major step to better brain health.
