Need some energy? Cheer up! There are simple, inexpensive things you can do to help. Of course, getting enough sleep (7-9 hours), exercising at least 150 minutes a week, and eating a healthy diet is foundational, but certain hacks can give you a boost when you need it most.

Regarding nutrition, the best energizing snack combines a carbohydrate with either a protein or an unsaturated fat. The carbs will give you a quick energy boost, and the protein or the unsaturated fat will help it last longer. Things like 1) apple slices or grapes with peanut butter, 2) hummus, egg salad, or avocado dip/guacamole with crackers, carrots, or celery, and 3) sardines or tuna with crackers could do the trick. Chewing in general, whether it’s gum, seeds, or food increases your blood flow and oxygen level, helping you stay alert. My husband Oliver stumbled on this trick years ago and always took a bag of sunflower seeds when he had to drive a long distance!

Other things to try at various times of the day include:

  • Opening blinds or curtains first thing in the morning (sunlight “sets your clock” and improves your mood)
  • Moving around for a few minutes, every hour or so. (Ex: climbing stairs, stretching, going out for a walk, changing location, doing a quick chore)
  • Breathing exercises (use diaphragm, breathe slowly, mouth closed)
  • Cold-water immersion: Shocking your system by splashing your face, staying in the shower or bathtub for a few minutes, or soaking your feet in cold water to make you more alert/attentive.
  • Take a quick power nap (20 minutes).
  • Spend a few minutes outside (Ex: eat a meal, nature walk, stress break)
  • Take a whiff of an essential oil, like eucalyptus, lemon, or other citrus.
  • Drink regular or infused water throughout the day (try not to guzzle it).
  • Writing things down (instead of trying to remember everything in your head) decreases your mental energy drain.
  • Vitamin C and B vitamins boost energy. Choose foods rich in them.
  • Ease energy drain from anxiety, stress, and depression using self-care strategies like talking to a friend, practicing mindfulness, or listening to upbeat music.
