Have you ever wondered if there’s a superfood that’s particularly good for your brain during certain seasons?

Well, let me tell you about the power of cherries and why they’re a fantastic choice for keeping our brain sharp.

Teachable Moments: Cherishing the Cherry Season

Ever heard of “teachable moments”? They’re those unexpected opportunities to gain a better understanding of something. And guess what? Cherry season is one of those moments! Cherries aren’t just delicious; they’re packed with nutrients that can benefit our brain and body.

Why Eat Cherries in Season?

Here’s why you should make the most of cherry season:

  • Fresh is Best: Fresh cherries are superior to frozen or processed ones. When cherries are processed, they can lose some of their nutritional value and even pick up unwanted contaminants. So, when it’s cherry season, go for the fresh ones!
  • Nutrient-rich: Fresh cherries during their peak season (May to July) are bursting with nutrients. They have more flavor, more beneficial compounds, and fewer natural plant toxins called lectins, which decrease as the fruit ripens.
  • Cost-effective: Let’s face it, cherries can be expensive. But during cherry season, they’re more abundant and often cheaper. Plus, since they bruise and spoil easily, sellers are more likely to reduce prices to sell them quickly.

Cherries as Brain Superfood

Cherries are truly a brain-boosting superfood. They contain natural melatonin, which can help you sleep better and improve our memory. The fiber in cherry skins also helps balance our blood sugar levels. But the benefits don’t stop there – cherries are also potent anti-inflammatory agents, which can ease headaches, joint pain, and even cognitive decline.

I’ve seen the power of cherries firsthand. My own mother was a huge fan, and she would buy them by the crate during the peak season. Even as she got older, the doctors always remarked on how sharp and quick-witted she remained. I believe her regular cherry consumption played a big role in keeping her brain strong and resilient.

Peak Season Benefits

Speaking of peak season, there are several reasons why you’ll want to take advantage of this 100-day window from May to July. First, the freshness and flavor of in-season cherries are unbeatable. They’ll be at their most nutrient-dense and have the lowest levels of natural plant toxins called lectins.

Additionally, cherries tend to be more affordable during their peak. As supply increases, prices often drop, making it the perfect time to stock up. Just be mindful that cherries are highly perishable, so you’ll want to enjoy them quickly before they spoil.

Brain and Body Benefits

Cherries don’t just benefit our brain—they’re also a powerhouse for our entire body. Their anti-inflammatory properties can help protect our heart by lowering cholesterol levels. They can also aid in managing blood sugar levels, making them a great choice for those with diabetes or prediabetes.

Cherries’ anti-inflammatory effects extend to the rest of our body as well, helping to ease the pain and stiffness of conditions like arthritis and gout. And some research even suggests they may lower our risk of certain cancers.

Organic Matters

While the benefits of cherries are numerous, it’s important to be mindful of their potential drawbacks. Cherries are unfortunately on the “Dirty Dozen” list compiled by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), meaning they tend to have high levels of pesticide residues. If possible, it’s best to opt for organic cherries to minimize our exposure to these harmful chemicals.

However, if organic cherries are not an option, don’t let that stop you from enjoying them. The EWG recommends that the health benefits of eating non-organic produce still outweigh the risks. Just be sure to wash them thoroughly before consuming.

Take advantage of the Cherry Season

So, there you have it—cherries are a true superfood for our brain and our body. Take advantage of their peak season from May to July and enjoy these delicious, nutrient-dense fruits to the fullest. Your brain (and the rest of you) will thank you!
